Paseo de Roxas, Makati City --- Last 20th of May, 2017, Saturday, 1pm onwards at the Amihan Design Center, 3f/l Zuellig Building, Makati City, Amihan Global Strategies (https://amihan.net/) held it’s 2nd Kubernetes Workshop.
Amihan Global Strategies is a technology company. That’s a company whose primary product is technology particularly computer technology. Amihan Global Strategies claims on their website: “is a technology company that accelerates digital transformation. With our innovative mindset, fast-paced culture, and global talent, we offer our expertise to leading institutions in ASEAN and beyond.”
“Digital Transformation” is what they serve. And that is actually a jargon in the industry to refer to the “evolution” or “transformation” of reality due to “digital technologies” such as online and social media and other imaginable computer technology. Digital Transformation may have capacities for “automating” and “streamlining” business processes – and it may also have pertinent relevance to end-users and consumers themselves, examples of this are Uber and Grab.
Amihan, the company, has the following written on their tarp.
“Be insightful
Harness the power of your customer data to make analytically driven business decisions.
Be engaging
“Mass Personalize” your customer experience. Enable anytime, anywhere engagement with mobile first customer connections that span all digital channels.
Be agile.
Continuously adapt to rapidly changing market needs. Develop a factory for rapid creation of service.”
These goals and visions summed up may mean: Data Mining (for the 1st one) (which means analyze data to make better business decisions), Content Personalization for User Experience (for the 2nd one) (which means make content personalized and not generic), and Company Flexibility (for the 3rd one) (for company survival and company adaptation to rapidly changing market).
The event today was a workshop on Kubernetes. Since it is a workshop, it is actually an organized program or event involving hands-on “exercises” & “training” to improve a skill especially in this case a technical computer skill. Thru out the day, participants were on their Mac’s attempting to emulate the speaker as he demonstrates how to use Kubernetes.
The speaker for the rest of the afternoon is Alistair Israel, the Solutions Architect of Amihan Global Strategies. He is also an enterprise architect.
Among the clients of Amihan are PLDT, BDO and Penshoppe, to name a few.
What are the implications of using Kubernetes? Among a few of them: faster, cheaper to “deploy” software and apps. (“deployment” is a computer jargon meaning “implementation” which involves all operations to “get the app out there” including installing, running, distribution, etc.); another implication is secure, since Kubernetes is based on the cloud it would be easier to secure it using firewalls as you only have to do the firewalls once and you can do multiples; another implication is Kubernetes is free.
Mr. Israel shares that Pokemon Go was an app that used Kubernetes. Mr. Israel also notes that according to statistics 90% of Filipino’s are on mobile (90 mln of 100mln), while 50 mln of that is on Android. And so Amihan advocates for a “mobile first” strategy. Asking businesses or whatever entities to have a mobile presence before anything else.
Kubernetes will function together with a Cloud Storage. And Kubernetes, in accordance to Amihan, is best with Google Cloud. (cloud.google.com)
