Biodynamic Association Humanity’s Last Stand – The Challenge of AI Spiritual-Scientific Response, Nicanor Perlas

Perlas gives an overview of the phenomenon of AI together with its related transhuman concepts of ‘perfecting humanity’, and outlines the critical internal and external responses required to meet them with consciousness. In particular, he addresses the movement connected to the work of Rudolf Steiner, indicating its all-important tasks: to cooperate with progressive individuals and movements, including scientists and civil society activists; to mobilize its ‘daughter’ movements for action; and, ultimately, to cooperate with the spiritual powers that have guided and served humanity since the dawn of time. This, says the author, is humanity’s last stand, and failure is not an option.

Although still in its earliest stages, artificial intelligence (AI) is radically transforming all aspects of society. With the immanent emergence of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) and the illusory temptations of ‘transhumanism’, mankind stands at a crossroads. In Humanity’s Last Stand, Nicanor Perlas makes an urgent plea. It is imperative, he says, that we take immediate steps to ensure that digitized technology is aligned to human values and priorities. Otherwise, ASI will kill the essence of our humanity. Further, if we do not master it now, ASI will transform mankind into its own image. Ultimately, it will destroy the human race.

AI experts have not offered a single cogent solution to this existential threat. Rudolf Steiner, however, not only foresaw these developments, but gave clear alternatives. Steiner, the founder of a contemporary, scientific approach to spirituality, provided philosophical, ontological and social innovations to save humanity from the abyss. It is the task of the global anthroposophical movement to pioneer this civilization-saving work: to establish spiritual-scientific ideas in mainstream culture that would allow AI to emerge in a healthier societal context.

‘Nicanor Perlas paints the dramatic dilemma of mankind today as it stands, torn in the tension field of the advancement of outer scientific intelligence and an inner, albeit mostly unconscious, knowing of the spirit within and around us. He describes the fragile and delicate solution as the living potential within each individual, as expressed in Rudolf Steiner’s words: “knowledge is man’s active participation in what the beings and processes of the spiritual and physical world convey to him.”’ – Joan Sleigh, Executive Council, Goetheanum

NICANOR PERLAS is an adviser, global activist, writer and speaker on artificial intelligence, globalization and spiritualized science. He has advised UN agencies, the Office of the President and Congress as well as cities and towns undertaking large-scale social threefolding projects. He has headed global and national civil society networks that were responsible for stopping 12 nuclear power plants, banning 32 pesticide formulations and bringing about mainstream sustainable development, including organic farming in the Philippines. Perlas is a member of the Senate Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. For the global impact of his work, he has received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize), the Outstanding Filipino Award and UNEP’S Global 500 Award. He is the author of Shaping Globalization: Civil Society, Cultural Power, Threefolding.

American Association of the Philippines First Woman President

May 26, 2021–The first ever woman President of American Association of the Philippines since it’s establishment 73 years ago is from Calauan, Laguna.

“The Board of the American Association of the Philippines (AAP) announces a reorganization and related appointments to reflect key initiatives in the last year. Former Vice-President Grace Nicolas Bondad has been named new President In recognition of her accomplishments in our key fund raising efforts. She is the first ever woman President of the AAP, a notable first!.”- Chairman Emeritus Rick Sobreviñas

Rick Sobrevinas, former Chairman was designated Cairman Emeritus and Chair of the American Historical Collection Committee which we intend to develop into a US - Philippine bi-country effort with considerable-American scholarly contributions.  We intend to unlock different perspectives from the American Academia on this grand ambition in the late 19th and the early to mid 20th Centuries.

A new Office has been created called "The Office of the Chairman" led by Joe Maristela, Bob Lane, and Den Manzano, Co-Chairs. Larry Dimagiba has been appointed Vice President, Corporate Secretary. This reorganization was long planned but delayed by events having to do with the Pandemic which interrupted travel movements, meetings, and timely decisions, but we are confident that the reorganization will provide the key leadership that will see the AAP through this crisis that have affected Charitable organizations all over the world, especially in the developed world.

Reorganizing and Refocusing of the American Historical Collection

The Board has decided to buttress the scholarship and academic research long term as a key raison d'etre of the Association. with an intention to hopefully add more clarity and insights into a period which has become an obscure but historically earthshaking saga in the legacy of America in a period where it first emerged as a global empire and the most powerful nation in the world with the highest GDP of all the countries. The Philippine experience marked the American debut into global leadership of the most powerful  and influential nation in the entire history of mankind The Philippines at Manila Bay was the Genesis of this continuing two century run that still is the driving force of world History, Politics, Economics and progress of the world today.

We have made great strides in likewise reorganizing the American Historical Collection Committee with the addition of two of the country's greatest scholars - Dr. Ron Mendoza, Head of the School of Government of the Ateneo de Manila University, a Harvard Master of Public Administration, and a Fordham University PhD in Economics. He was known as the most prolific scholar at the AIM, who produced the lion's share of the research publications including books in the institution. He has continued this prolific scholarly output at the Ateneo and will be a major contributor to the scholarship of the American Historical Collection. The Collection was bequeathed to the AAP by the US Embassy as Owner in Trust.

Another great academic addition to the American Historical Committee is Mr. Ambeth Ocampo, former Head of the History Department of the Ateneo and recipient of multiple awards for his academic scholarship with innumerable publications and books on Philippine History. He is also a famous Columnist at the Philippine Daily Inquirer known for his astute articles and observations.

On the US side, we have, Dr. Alex Orquiza, PhD, a History Professor at Providence College has also joined AAP's American Historical Collection Committee, He is a History PhD from the Johns Hopkins University and has a BA from UC Berkeley University, both top universities in the US. During his PhD studies at Johns Hopkins, he actually travelled to the Philippines and did  research at the American Historical Collection home at the Ateneo's Rizal Library. He is the first of many academic scholars the American Association will add through the years as we redefine ourselves and evolve. AAP will have a socially distance and virtual George Washington Event on June 27, 2021 to celebrate the 73rd years anniversary of AAPs establishment in the Philippines.

International Silent Film Festival Manila Launches Silent Film Competition on its 15th Year

Mit Out Sound, the country’s first film lab on silent filmmaking, will culminate with a Silent Short Film Competition at the International Silent Film Festival Manila in November

On its 15th year, the International Silent Film Festival Manila (ISFFM) has stepped up efforts to promote silent filmmaking in the Philippines by establishing Mit Out Sound (MOS): International Silent Film Lab 2021

The ISFFM is a joint partnership among the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), Embassy of France in Manila, Philippine Italian Association, Goethe-Institute Philippinen, Instituto Cervantes de Manila, and Japan Foundation, Manila.

Established in 2007, the ISFFM is among the few remaining silent film festivals in the world and the first and oldest Southeast Asian silent film festival. It is an awaited cultural event among cinephiles and music lovers as it brings together film classics and Filipino musicians on the same stage to perform and reinterpret stories.

Through the online MOS: International Silent Film Lab, the ISFFM aims to encourage the production of silent films and discover new talents who will be mentored by local and international filmmakers on story development, editing, technicalities, and other elements of silent filmmaking to better translate their visual narratives.

The ISFFM committee will choose 10 filmmakers to undergo the intensive MOS film lab. The FDCP, through its Film Cultural Exchange Program (FCEP), will conduct all MOS activities, including the Visual Storytelling Lab, Safe Filming Lab, and Editing Lab sessions that will be held via Zoom.

Participants will each be awarded a production grant worth PHP 50,000 to produce their silent shorts that will premiere at the Silent Short Film Competition in the 15th ISFFM in November 2021.

During the festival’s culmination, incentive awards will also be given: Best Film Award (PHP 20,000 with trophy and certificate), Jury’s Special Prize Award (PHP 10,000 with trophy and certificate), and Jose Nepomuceno Award (PHP 15,000 with trophy and certificate).

“Philippine Cinema has lost most of its early silent films. This sad reality inspired the creation of the first Mit Out Sound: International Silent Film Lab in order to revive the interest in silent filmmaking and enhance the expertise of Filipino filmmakers in creating unique and quality films,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

She noted that silent filmmaking is crucial in the history of Philippine Cinema because the first movie produced and directed by a Filipino, “Dalagang Bukid” by Jose Nepomuceno, was a silent film. The classic’s release date of September 12, 1919 was the basis of the declaration of Sine Sandaan or One Hundred Years of Philippine Cinema.

Since the production of silent films only appeals to a few filmmakers, the ISFFM has issued a nationwide call for entries by amateur and professional filmmakers aged 16 and above.

With the theme “Reimagining the Past with the Present,” the MOS: International Silent Film Lab seeks to celebrate film retrospective and pay homage to Philippine silent cinema. Submissions must present the filmmakers’ artistic and contemporary reimagination and recreation of any of the following Filipino silent film classics:
● “Dalagang Bukid” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Ang Tatlong Hambog” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Ang Manananggal” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Moro Pirates” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Mang Tano, Nuno ng mga Aswang” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Tianak” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Mali-Mali” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Estrellita del cine” by Jose Nepomuceno
● “Miracles of Love” by Vicente Salumbides
● “Patria Amore” by Julian Manansala
● “Oriental Blood” by Carmen Concha

Interested filmmakers should submit the following requirements in an organized Google Drive folder with a shared viewing setting to specialprojects@fdcp.ph until June 18, 2021:
● Presentation deck of the story treatment (Applicants may submit a maximum of two treatments.)
● Accomplished application form
● Official government ID
● Portfolio of past works
To download the application form and view the full mechanics, visit https://www.fdcp.ph/mitoutsound and for inquiries, contact Ms. Julienne Calugcug at jmcalugcug.fdcp@gmail.com or specialprojects@fdcp.ph.

Launching and Inauguration of the Advanced Manufacturing Center

OPENING MESSAGE
Fortunato T. Dela Peña
Secretary, Department of Science and Technology

June 14, 2021

Key government officials, DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez, Department of Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III, Taguig Mayor Lino Edgardo S. Cayetano, MIRDC Executive Director Robert O. Dizon.

Our partners, suppliers, supporters;
Our valued stakeholders;
Friends from the media;
ladies and gentlemen, magandang umaga sa inyo!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Inauguration and Grand Launching of the Advanced Manufacturing Center, a Philippines’ first. The Advanced Manufacturing Center, or AMCen, aims to be the Center of Excellence and premier hub for additive manufacturing.

The DOST’s long-term vision is to be the provider of world-class scientific, technological, and innovative solutions that will lead to higher productivity and better quality of life, benefiting the Filipino people. By 2022, the DOST envisions to be a leading Science, Technology, and Innovation Hub in the ASEAN region. Building the AMCen is a crucial strategy to achieve this goal.

Additive Manufacturing (AM), the process of building an object layer-by-layer from a digital model, plays an important role for the DOST’s vision, more specifically, on increasing the country’s competitiveness as we seek to join other global players in partaking of opportunities brought about by the fourth industrial revolution or more commonly, Industry 4.0.

As described by Dilberoglu et al. in Procedia Manufacturing, on The Role of Additive Manufacturing in the era of Industry 4.0, Industry 4.0 aims to build smart factories by offering cyber and physical systems. The idea in this industrial revolution is to gather and analyze information from physical entities such as products, machines, and production lines from the Internet of Things (IoT); Big Data from consumers and suppliers; and the processing of all available information via cloud computing. All these processed information are then utilized for smart manufacturing.

Smart manufacturing necessitates the need for mass customization, which is currently impossible with conventional manufacturing techniques. This is where Additive Manufacturing (or AM) comes in. AM enables the production of highly customized and complex-shaped objects using existing and newly developed advanced materials.

With this in mind, the DOST funded the construction of AMCen, with a total budget of 10 Million dollars, including the Materials Development Laboratory of the DOST-ITDI. In September 2019, we were also here at the MIRDC to celebrate the Philippine Additive Manufacturing day. Back then, the land where AMCen is now, was an old Citric Plant. Layer by layer, we built the AMCen.

Despite the global pandemic which started last March 2020, hindi tayo huminto.  We went against all odds to build the Philippines’ first additive manufacturing facility, granting workers for a skeletal workforce system.

Fast forward to today, June 2021.  Here we are, inside the AMCen, surrounded by world-class and cutting-edge 3D printing equipment and technologies. As I mentioned in the AM day, we are aiming to be ahead of everyone else, globally, in the next five years. One of our visions is that we, Filipinos, will be as good at AM as we are at BPO’s.
The inauguration of AMCen is just the beginning. The DOST will continue its support to AMCen for the development of a pool of AM experts, and for the expansion of its capabilities. In the near future, we will explore the applications of 3D printing in other fields, such as bio-printing for medical applications, and 3D printing of electronic components to support the semiconductor industry, among others. Soon, expect more trained engineers, scientists, and well-versed technicians achieving prominent breakthroughs in the development of innovative additive manufacturing technologies, products, processes, and materials.

We are currently in constant communication with AM consultants, ASTM and universities, in developing curriculum and training materials for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. As for our in-house engineers, scientists, and technicians, their next tranche of overseas training will commence once the travel restrictions have been lifted.

The DOST will continue supporting our innovators from different sectors requiring additive manufacturing in their technological applications. We will get there, the Philippines’ global competitiveness index number will rise as we play our role in terms of science and technological advancements.

All of these will not be possible without the fruitful efforts of the MIRDC and the ITDI project leaders of AMCen, Engr. Fred P. Liza and the retired Dr. Blessie Basilia, now succeeded by Dr. Marianito Margarito, along with their project teams, the RAPPID-ADMATEC personnel, and the MATDEV team. I also would like to acknowledge the support of the MIRDC and the ITDI Executive Directors, Engr. Robert O. Dizon and Dr. Annabelle V. Briones; our partners from the different sectors: the academe, start-ups, the government, our technology partners, and the industry. Together, we are going beyond the conventional.

From this day onwards, we will witness our AM success story unfold – and with our success story comes the success of Filipinos.

More power to AMCen.  More power to the collaborators and partners.  More power to all of us who will be behind all of AMCen’s success stories in the years to come.

“It’s certainly a huge step forward, especially when it comes to combating vaccine
hesitancy,” saad niya.

“This is a big boost,” ani Concepcion, “especially following the endorsement of the DOLE,” dagdag pa niya.

“The DOH concluded after discussions with experts that the benefits of receiving the vaccine outweigh the risks, and we wholeheartedly agree,” saad niya. “We need to vaccinate as many Filipinos as we can so we can achieve herd immunity and give people back their jobs.”

“Economic frontliners come in all age groups, and we need everyone safe and vaccinated for us to return back to normal,” ani Concepcion.

Established in 2017, Sine Kabataan is conducted alongside the PPP wherein the finalists’ short films are screened nationwide during the PPP duration, with one short film shown before an official PPP entry.

“We are truly proud that Sine Kabataan this year is able to provide funding support for the production of short films of very promising filmmakers all over the country. Let us continue to nurture our young filmmakers by giving them platforms to tackle issues relevant to the youth. This is the goal of Sine Kabataan and we commend the finalists for bravely covering themes such as the impact of technology to society, poverty, social divide, bullying, family, HIV, teenage pregnancy, LGBT, and mental health,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

In September 2020, filmmakers of the shortlisted projects were also given access to masterclasses in FDCP’s Film Industry Conference and Workshop Series Online.

“Above and beyond with Saka Resort”

Saka Resort in Tarlac opened in 2009 with only a handful of cottages and resources. The first employees were the owner’s children that helped during cleaning and closing time. The resort has seen its share of typhoons that wiped out cottages and their old pavilion. Minor and major renovations were made, and cottages were built and upgraded. Eleven years later, Covid struck.
During the pandemic, the management continued supporting their employees by giving food—even when they shut down their operations due to restrictions. When they opened back up, the employees were given shift turns to keep working despite the low customer turnout. Pools were kept clean, gardens were taken cared of, a souvenir pop-up shop was installed, ensuring work for their employees. It was undoubtedly a challenging year.

However, since then, Saka Resort has launched their website, built a couple more cottages, set up an indoor garden events area, and has made a few more improvements here and there while keeping to their theme.

Challenges have been brought about by life and circumstance, but the Saka Resort family remain resilient and steadfast. Saka Resort carried on and has since continued making mark in people’s lives, a place where families and friends make beautiful memories together.

You may visit their website at www.sakaresort.com or message them on their Facebook at www.facebook.com/SAKARESORT.

Navigating through the pandemic with Saka Resort”

During summer seasons like this, people escape their homes and seek haven at hotels and resorts. Families would take their children to bond over some pansit, lumpia, barbeque, and halo-halo, as they wait for the sun to move before they jump in the pool to cool themselves down. But with all the restrictions imposed because of Covid, the summer season has been tough on the tourism sector. Such is the case with Saka Resort in Tarlac Province.
However, not all is grim, as Saka Resort complies with all the safety protocols; only accepting less than 50%, making sure cottages are sanitized, and only used every other day. They also have a reservation system in place and refuse entry when the number of people allowed is reached. Deposits can be paid via electronic banking or Gcash to encourage cashless transactions. The pools are cleaned daily to ensure clear and clean water.

Saka Resort is an idyllic part of Tarlac with open air cottages, and lots of outdoor space. Air circulation is not a problem, and you can forego the AC and open the windows if staying overnight.

“Experience provincial living at Saka Resort”

The first thing you would notice upon entering Saka Resort is their Anahaw-made reception area that also doubles as a pavilion for small events, or a community dining area for backpackers. The chairs, tables, and even the displays are mostly made from wood trimmings. The owner confirms this, saying that most of the furniture in Saka are from salvaged wood from trees that have been uprooted by typhoons—the perfect backdrop for a large swimming pool.

You can feel the strong presence of nature when walking around the resort. It does not focus on fancy theme-park slides and gigantic display statues, but on wood, plants, trees, and flowers. The owners lived in the Metro for the better part of their lives, and they wanted their project to be a place where people from the city can clear their minds and enjoy nature.

“I think it is very important that the new generation also find comfort in nature. City life can be stressful and fast-paced, and we want them to appreciate the quiet, serene province. We like hearing relaxed laughter.”
The owner explains.

Saka Resort is located at San Jose Tarlac. You may visit their website at www.sakaresort.com or message them on their Facebook at www.facebook.com/sakaSAKARESORT.

LTO-TESDA signed Agreement driving school standards for the public

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) earlier today signed the Memorandum of Agreement to formalize the agencies' partnership to strengthen driver’s education in the country.

The MOA was signed by LTO Chief Edgar C. Galvante and TESDA Director General Secretary Isidro “Sid” Lapeña. LTO Executive Director Romeo Vera Cruz and TESDA Deputy Director General for TESD Operations Lina Sarmiento served as witnesses to the signing.

The MOA will ensure uniformity of standards among driving schools, and the availability of less expensive training courses, to raise the competency of drivers using the country’s roads.

"We have partnered with TESDA because we want to tap their expertise to ensure the quality of driver’s training being given by driving schools, the LTO and TESDA," Assistant Secretary Edgar C. Galvante said,

Further, the LTO Chief said that with the TESDA, more free driving courses will be available to the public.

"Sa partnership na ito, mas marami na ang ma-ooffer ng gobyerno na libreng driving courses para sa mga interesadong mag-avail ng driver’s training. Ito po ang sagot ng ating mga pamahalaan sa hiling ng publiko para sa dekalidad at murang training program para sa mga drivers," Asec Galvante emphasized.

TESDA DG Secretary Lapeña, for his part, said that the MOA aims to provide "safe drivers."

"Sa ating data from PSA [Philippine Statistics Authorit], isa sa mga pangangailangan sa labor market ay mga qualified drivers. As we transition to the new normal, kailangan ng mga drivers, ito ang constant na pangangailangan ng mga industries. And, we have regional offices who can reach out to those in need of the training. Libre po ito,' Secretary Lapeña revealed.

The MOA will empower TESDA and its training centers to offer the Theoretical Driving Course and the Practical Driving Course equivalent to that being offered by the LTO Driver’s Education Centers. The TESDA Driving National Certificates courses will be equivalent to those offered by LTO.

Further, it will harmonize rules to ensure quality training for drivers. The MOA will complement the existing trainings to address uniformity and standard, at the same time comply with the ease of doing business. This will greatly help the LTO respond to the demand for quality and less expensive driving courses.

The IT Man behind the Asia Leaders Awards!

For years of being an IT in the Center of the business world, Wall Street, New York City, USA, Andrew Troy Nicolas shifted to help the rising Tag Media and Public Relations eventually became Tag Media Group that manages concerts, advertising, marketing, public relations and campaigns of different companies from different industries in Asia Pacific.

His expertise is Business Intelligence (BI), checking everyday the data as the basis of the actual position. BI comprises the strategies and technologies used by enterprises for the data analysis of business information. BI technologies provide historical, current, and predictive views of business operations.

As the Group CEO of Tag Media Group, he approves the launching of AAA Cosmetics and Trading Company (GlamHigh Cosmetics, Graceful Skin Essentials, Immune CEE, GlutaGlow Slimming Drinks) last November 2020. As per analysis, even during pandemic, there’s still a demand from consumers who are into weight loss, those who are always in online meetings, for health and wellness and still to beautify or improve their personal appearances since most are staying home so more focus on their physical appearance and well being. As of this writing, the company has more than 100 distributors nationwide with few already in Milan and Taiwan. Targeting at least a thousand at the end of this year, not bad business during Pandemic.

Troy as his team calls him, is the one handling the management of all IT related items and monitoring it like the social media accounts, multiple websites under the company and even some of the content. He is making sure that all has a positive impact in the lives of the clients and followers.

The signature events under Tag Media and Public Relations (Asia Digital Marketing Expo, Asia HR Expo, Asia E Commerce Expo, Dwelo, Asia’s Best Singing Competition)  might be in halt because of this global health crisis but Asia Leaders Forums and Awards (ALA) are still thriving with the support of its stakeholders and organising committee. Announcement of honourees will be this May 20, 2021 and awarding ceremony will be on November 11, 2021 at Embassy of Singapore.

According to Troy, “It’s all about big data and actual projections. We will also continue our AG Builders and Developers, the construction company under Tag Media Group. We’re hiring right now since clients, even afraid of this pandemic still likes to secure their family with a home as their legacy. The brands under AAA Cosmetics are still new but there’s a lot of inquiries. The events are still here even online as we wanted to still be relevant and the followers we have likes to learn more and to see what’s new so we have Cocktail Hour under Asia Leaders Awards, the show with the honourees of ALA to present their lighter side of success. We’re not stopping and keeps on innovating.”

DOST-SEI, partners vow more int’l victories for Pinoy STEM students

From math Olympiads to robotics competitions, Filipino students have been consistently making their mark in the international arena thanks to the tireless efforts of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) and its educational partners—some of whom have been the agency’s allies for well over two decades.

The Institute and its partners recently reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony on April 14, 2021. The entire event was held online, a poignant reminder of the unusual circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as of the determination and creativity of the various agencies to overcome these challenges.

“While Filipinos will always be known for our resiliency, it’s time that we thrived beyond that,” said DOST-SEI Director Josette T. Biyo. “We are thankful to our partners for helping us and our Filipino youth to grow into something bigger and brighter, through STEM.”

Dir. Biyo presided over the ceremony, with long-time partners in attendance including National Olympiad in Informatics, Philippines; the Asian MathSci League, Inc.; FELTA Multi-Media, Inc.; the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild, Philippines; the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology; the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology; the Philippine Meterological Society, Inc.; the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Inc.; and the Mathematical Society of the Philippines.

“Though the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the educational landscape around the world, we look forward to continue to inspire our youth to pursue STEM careers by showing them that they have the capability to win against all odds in international competitions,” Dir. Biyo concluded.
