PAPER ABSTRACT
In today’s global society, the Philippines is rigidly exposed to too much delicate encounters and challenges between and among countries in Asia, the Middle East, the Americas (USA, Canada, Latin America), Europe, Africa, and the island countries in the Pacific. These encounters and challenges involve political, diplomatic, economic, historical and cultural relationships that, in so many ways, would have enormous repercussions affecting one other. Considering that the Philippines has its own historical and cultural past, a schematic plan for the effective teaching and productive use of the social sciences should already be formulated and implemented to educate its people and prepare them for the present and tomorrow’s overwhelming experiences. This schematic plan should plot out a flow chart of actions whereby its citizens are properly guided to specific objectives and activities that would make themselves properly educated and experienced, ready to face the world of work and confront global challenges that would affect them and their country. Past and present lessons of history, national or otherwise, should make them aware of their implications to improving local governance and international relations, prospective national and global economic potentials or coping with related unfortunate failures, and, ultimately, the appreciation of worldwide cultural legacies and the conservation of extant global cultural heritage. Our government policy makers and the academic institutions should already have paved the grounds for the effective training and the scholarly qualifications of Filipino students. That the latter should have already known the productive educational path they are heading to and the scientific training and practical knowledge of the social sciences that they must have earlier absorbed in the tertiary schools. Nevertheless, how could these be done?
Firstly, the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education should rectify and improve the effectivity of the present curricular offerings to make our students equipped with useful linguistic and academic knowledge and preparations without destroying the very soul of our history and culture . That the results of educational and social researches should be made available to both students and teachers, for diagnostic and prognostic purposes;
Secondly, to promote commerce and tourism, our government’s Departments of Foreign Affairs, Finance and other related agencies should have excellent friendship with countries we already had diplomatic relations. Yet, there is still a strong need to open more embassies and consular offices in other countries where the prospect of good economic and political ties could bolster our economic stability and territorial integrity. We missed to become a member of the Organization of Latin American countries, where the Philippines is historically and culturally linked. The Philippines Is considered a Hispanoamericano country on account of her Hispanic culture and history. One should know that Spain is our strong advocate in the European Community, especially on economic and political matters. With good diplomacy comes tourism possibilities and economic potentials that are favorable to the country and the Filipino people.
Thirdly, making social sciences part and parcel of human development and making it work for peace and prosperity of the country should be the ultimate aim of education. That History, Political Sciences, Economics, including “Culture and Heritage,” which are topics under Anthropology, are related with each other and the important ideas and practices discussed in these domains could serve as bridges or linkages for a prosperous and productive life among Filipinos now and in the future. Knowledge and practices obtained from these areas of specializations could help institute a healthy understanding of the people in different situations or create a friendly environment for local and global communities. The connective knowledge and effective practices of the social sciences could serve as a tool in the attainment of national pride and stability, thereby ensuring global peace and prosperity.
THE CONFERENCE IS DIVIDED INTO SIX SESSIONS, EACH GOVERNED BY A SPECIFIC THEME.
Thee Organization of Area Studies Majors (OrgASM) is an academic and socio-civic organization of the BA Social Sciences (Area Studies) Program of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Manila.
