Bing Lao's Writing Workshop
Forward fm another site..
As one of the country’s most prolific screenwriters, Armando “Bing” Lao has been honored by just about every award-winning body in the country, including the Film Academy of the Philippines, the FAMAS and the Gawad Urian.
Best known for the screenplays of acclaimed films such as Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Pila Balde” and “Kubrador”, Brillante Mendoza’s “Kinatay”, Chito Roño’s “Suntok sa Buwan” and “La Vida Rosa”, Emmanuel H. Borlaza’s “Oras Oras, Araw Araw”, and his own directorial debut “Biyaheng Lupa”, Lao recently won the Special Jury Prize for his second film, “Ad Ignorantiam”, in the New Wave Section of the recent Metro Manila Film Festival.
“Lao is more than just a screenwriter as his scripts are written with directorial vision. Instead of merely constructing the narrative and characters and leaving the rest of the creative process to the director, Lao immerses into the entire filmmaking process, stamping each and every one of the films which he had a part in with auteurial integrity,” wrote noted film critic Oggs Cruz in his review of “Biyaheng Langit”.
Like colleague Ricky Lee, Lao is also very generous when it comes to imparting his expertise and wisdom to budding screenwriters. Next month, he will hold a six-session scriptwriting workshop based on his upcoming manual, “Found Story”.
“The ‘Found Story’ workshop is a powerful tool not only as a writer allowing one to learn the fundamentals and new ways of crafting the narrative. It allows participants to be better practitioners in their respective crafts—director, producer, editor, production designer, cinematographer, actor, documentarist, and educator, to name a few,” Henry Burgos, 2012 MMFF Best Original Story winner for “Thy Womb”, told InterAksyon.
“It’s simply because the learning principles are universal, profound and practical at the same time. Also, the application of the knowledge is not limited to alternative film, but to other genres as well. You’ll be trained to think critically, viewing the film narrative elements in their proper context,” he further elaborated.
In paying tribute to Lao whom he considers a mentor and inspiration for his films, internationally acclaimed filmmaker Brillante Mendoza added that the workshop participants will benefit immensely from Lao’s wealth of experience and unique style as well.
“The workshoppers will be introduced to the school of ‘Found Story’ which is a very relevant and useful tool to alternative filmmaking and most especially to independent filmmakers,” the “Thy Womb” director told InterAksyon.
For his part, Lao himself places emphasis on an out-of-the-box approach in training his participants how to think critically and how they can apply it to their future screenplays.
“Critical thinking is the ability to see the invisible. What it is that you see that other people don’t see?” he asked.
Lao’s “Found Story” workshop will take place on February 4-9 or 11-16, 1-5pm at unit 1034 3rd Floor Building 10, Mapagkumbaba St corner Maginhawa, Sikatuna Bliss, Diliman QC (near Camp Karingal). Slots are limited. For inquiries and reservations, please contact Henry Burgos at +639276706552.

Goody goody kefir and I gotcha kombucha! A talk on real
energising refreshment – 3 September, Saturday from 2pm to 5pm
Real energising refreshment comes from getting nourishment
from your beverage and not just sugar, flavourings and colourings.
Kefir and kombucha are two beverages with ancient origins
that have withstood the test of time as they have potent health benefits –
almost too good to be true for a lot of people but even more people from all
over the world attest to its curative powers.
And with talented kefir and kombucha brewers Marjoree “Jeren” Cabral of
Goody Kefir and Brent Metken of Planet Health Kombucha, these otherwise obscure
beverages are now fast gaining popularity amongst health buffs and other people
in the Metropolis.
Jeren and Brent will discuss kefir and kombucha’s origins and
health benefits. Sugarleaf’s Angelo N.
Songco and Gina S. Yambot will show practical easy-to-do recipes using kefir
and kombucha in other applications to make it even more appetising to everyone
of all ages.
The workshop is P300 per person with healthy snacks and
samplings of the preparations demonstrated.
Lifetime Lifestyle Change! A practical guide to
detoxification – 17 September, Saturday 2pm to 5pm
Change usually happens when a significant event whether
positive or negative happens in one’s life.
In the case of entrepreneur-journalist Zonito Torevillas-Tamase, a
health crisis spanning several years while she was working in the corporate
world encouraged her to shift priorities and turned inwards into herself.
After being given so much medication for high blood pressure
and other ailments, she did a lot of self study, attended training, and conducted
research regarding the curative powers of detoxification. Years later, she’s free from having to take pharmaceutical
drugs and has made it her advocacy to teach what she’s discovered to more
people.
Zonito is also a pioneer proponent of malunggay (moringa) use in the Philippines and has developed many
tasty food items from this super food.
Her practical hands-on workshop includes an introduction to
detoxification, its health benefits, discussion on materials and recommended take-home
eating plan to maximise its effect.
Aside from physical detoxification, Zonito will also touch on
other aspects of life balance such as stress management, relationships and
spirituality.
The morning and afternoon session can only accommodate up to
ten persons as each participant will undergo a guided enema procedure. Participation is P2,500 per person with a
practical take-home guide to continue the regimen.

S.A.D. Becomes Happy! On 19 November
The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.)
has been the major cause of a lot of diseases prevalent today. Burgers and fries, fast fried food, ice cream
and other dairy-based products heavily processed with refined sugars have
caused not just physical illnesses but imbalances in the emotional lives of
many people.
For those who seek meals that favor a
feeling of lightness over sorrow, the good news is that this popular but
unhealthy diet can be transformed into living food that can actually mock the
taste of S.A.D. food without the illness-causing ingredients. Once anyone
commits to a plant-based diet, happiness becomes a natural effect of a raw
lifestyle that supports the total well-being of any individual.

Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako Is Here!
The story begins with the establishment of the three
different worlds apart, bound to meet for an adventure like no other – the
humble family-oriented story of ENTENG KABISOTE (VIC SOTTO), a low-profile
technician married to the beautiful Fairy Princess of Encantasia, FAYE (GWEN
ZAMORA); the battles of the AGIMAT (RAMON “BONG” REVILLA, JR.), the brave
village Warrior Hero of Amuleto; and the high tech-yuppie Kingdom of Diwatara
ruled by Princess ANGELINA KALINISAN-ORTEZA (JUDY ANN SANTOS), also known in
the human world as “AKO,” where she leads an environmental advocacy
organization.
From the initial instalment “Si Agimat at Si Enteng
Kabisote” in 2010, the friendship and partnership of Enteng and Agimat
continues. From an ‘eligible bachelor’ Hero, Agimat now strives to apply all
his learning from Enteng and Faye as he himself tries to start his own family
with wife, also an Amuleto warrior, SAMARA (SAM PINTO). The fun levels up as
Aiza brings Angelina and her comic modern Fairy sidekicks Pink Kapre CHE (John
Lapus), Winged Horse SOL (Yassi Pressman) and Computer-wiz Dwarf CHICHAY (Ryzza
Mae Dizon), into the lives of the Kabisote’s and the Amuleto couple.
As the fun triples, so as the adventure and thrill as they
are confronted with high-tech and primitive villains from somewhere totally out
of their worlds: cannibal tribes of the Tokatoks and filthy alien monsters from
other planet. Witness unparalleled battle stunts set in the Philippines’
never-before-seen destinations as Agimat, equipped with his one-of-a-kind
swordsmanship, Enteng and his iconic comic fighting style and Princess
Angelina, in her Mystical Bird alter ego wins the battle of good over evil.
Enteng movie as it has always been known, values family,
marriage, friendship, responsibility, forgiveness, love and respect and the
protection of the one and only Mother Earth. Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at
Ako, is a rollercoaster ride of drama, action, magic, visual effects,
production design, cinematography and an unlimited fun and laughter for
everyone.
