Design Center emphasizes commitment to strengthen design sector hubs in PH through Creative Innovators Programme. Through a collaboration with the British Council Philippines for the Creative Innovators Programme, Design Center of the Philippines Executive Director Rhea Matute emphasized the agency’s commitment to creative industries, specifically to strengthen the Philippine design sector, through the country’s various design hubs, that act as valuable catalysts in the
development of vibrant and competitive MSMEs.
During the press conference at the British Council’s new office in The Curve, Matute also said that the Design Center and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as a whole, throughout the fellowship program, will further allow the agency to create a stronger relationship between
the design and business communities throughout the country.
Further, Matute noted that the Design Center aims to provide and eventually strengthen the country’s design ecosystem and in turn to grow the creative economy of the country.
“For us at the Design Center, we see design as an integral part to the Philippines’ Creative Economy and that design is math and magic combined,” Matute explained. “It’s not just about the aesthetics… the bigger raison d'être is about providing design solutions to businesses that
allow Philippine MSMEs to compete locally and to compete globally,” she added.M atute also expressed that the Design Center is “bullish” about the Creative Innovators Programme, citing design as a “high-potential industry” in the Philippines.
The Creative Innovators Programme is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the British Council of the Philippines which aims to build the next generation of creative community leaders through a fellowship program for creative and design hub managers. The program will provide fellows with mentorships, management trainings, grants, and networking opportunities in the Philippines, ASEAN, and the UK.
