ASIA INFRASTRUCTURE SUMMIT 2017

The new government of Rodrigo Duterte, the "Most Popular President in the World," has announced it will double public infrastructure spending to 5.5 percent of GDP in 2017.  This action will propel Philippines onto the world stage as the fastest growing major economy on the planet. In total Php8 trillion is allocated for modern roads, airports, rail, seaports, on and on. The opportunities for Filipinos will be limitless and it all starts now!

Hear Charito Plaza of PEZA, Cathy Cabral of DPWH, Ruth Castelo of CIAP and other key members of the new government, plus Jesse Ang of IFC, Ernie de Castro of PICE, Joey LevisteJun PalafoxEmma ImperialMon AlladoPeter Wallace, and more at Asia Infrastructure Summit 2017

The industry wonders how it will be possible. Already most construction projects in the country are behind schedule due to severe shortages of skilled labor and a multitude of other critical problems. How can the government double infrastructure spending when the industry can’t even keep up with current projects?

Other major concerns with publicly-funded infrastructure include:
+ Why are the nation’s largest and most recognized engineering companies rarely part of government projects?
+ Why does DPWH insist on its own certification requirements when PCAB is the respected industry standard?

Quality assurance is another serious concern. Oversight of government construction projects is provided by government employees themselves who receive daily allowances as low as Php800 — despite overseeing multi-million dollar projects. Without third-party oversight, industry insiders fear colossal project failures and international embarrassment.
