DOST-FNRI launches new Enhanced Nutribun with carrots

Do you remember the Enhanced Nutribun launched by the Department of Science and 

Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in July 2020?

Have your children tasted the Enhanced Nutribun?

This is what the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) include in food packs for their feeding programs since it is not possible to offer the usual “hot meals” during pandemic.

One of the main ingredients of Enhanced Nutribun launched in 2020 is the purée or crushed 

and mashed squash.This coming April 28, 2021 via Zoom, a new "variant" of Enhanced Nutribun will be launched--the Enhanced Nutribun with Carrots.

The DOST-FNRI developed a new “variant” of Enhanced Nutribun so that feeding coordinators in supplementary feeding programs will have another more nutritious and delicious “choice”. Moreover, vegetable farmers will also benefit from the additional demand for carrots.

It will also serve as a call to all entrepreneurs, prospective technology adoptors and other 

stakeholders to continue the fight against the country’s malnutrition problems and contribute to the government’s efforts towards zero hunger.

Similar to the previous Enhanced Nutribun, the new “variant” or the Enhanced Nutribun 

with Carrots is a bread with natural fiber with no artificial flavor and color. It provides energy, protein, vitamin A, iron, calcium, potassium, and zinc in significant quantities recommended for young children. It has zero trans-fatty acids (or trans-fats) and has no cholesterol

It is a round-shaped bun that is shiny, light yellowish with orange speckles, sweet, delicious 

and milky that is acceptable for all ages. 

Each bun weighs approximately 160 grams, which is the recommended amount for one serving.

 When packed in polyethylene (PE) plastic, it can last up to 5 days at room temperature.

One serving of Enhanced Nutribun with Carrots contains 500 kilocalories, 18 grams of protein, 6 milligrams of iron and 350 micrograms (ug) of vitamin A.It can provide 31% of energy, 59% of protein, 60% of iron, and 90% of vitamin A, based on the recommended energy and nutrient intake of the Philippine Dietary Reference Intake (PDRI) of a reference male child six to nine years old.

The DOST-FNRI is inviting adoptors of the first variant of Enhanced Nutribun, bakery 

companies and even bakeries in communities to become adopters of the Enhanced 

Nutribun with Carrots technology to make it more available to consumers nationwide.
