International Film Expo 2013 This Sept 6-7 @SMX!

     Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) opens the 2013 International Film Exposition (IFX) at the SMX Convention Center  – Manila  on September 6 and 7 to elevate the national film industry in the global arena.

Following up on the success of IFX 2012 in Davao City, IFX 2013 will be a bigger and more focused event that will allow invited local and international film exhibitors, filmmakers, industry suppliers, film production studios, and academic institutions to interact and explore opportunities for co-production and technical or educational exchange.

With the theme “Your Film Corridor to Asia”, IFX 2013 is presented as:

1.) the most effective vehicle that features the latest trends and technologies in filmmaking,
2.) a distinct international marketplace for film-related products and services
3.) an interactive venue for the exchange of ideas between film stakeholders around the world, and
4.) a direct link between foreign and local production companies, producers, distributors, filmmakers, artists, and academic institutions.

Highlight of the exposition will be a film market designed to catapult the Philippines as a film hub in Asia. With the country being centrally located, the IFX will showcase the Philippines as very much accessible to most Asian countries and offering safe and affordable filming experience with its varied strategic and beautiful locations. The Expo will also aim to position the Philippines as an emerging trendsetter in the field of cinema by being at the forefront of latest trends, development, and technologies in the Asia-Pacific region.

A major component of the IFX 2013 is the International Film Conference (IFC) which will feature a series of symposia covering a wide array of topics about the state, challenges, and opportunities surrounding the film industry worldwide. The conference will bring together international stakeholders in film to discuss critical issues affecting the film industry worldwide, present technological advances and promote education as a tool towards a future-ready film industry.

Also included is the Film ASEAN Summit. It centers on the theme, "Regional Empowerment and Mutual Cooperation", and will advance the crafting of an ASEAN film agenda to accelerate the development of the film industry in the ASEAN region.

Cine Europa is "Sweet Sixteen"!

National Conference on Language and Literature : Language and Literature at the Crossroads: Research Routes, Learning Landscapes, Teaching Terrains

The Department of English and Comparative Literature of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, the College English Teachers' Association, and the Council of Department of Chairpersons of English, in partnership with Primetrade Asia, Inc. will hold the National Conference on Language and Literature with the theme Language and Literature at the Crossroads: Research Routes, Learning Landscapes, Teaching Terrains on September 10-12, 2013 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

The National Conference on Language and Literature is a three-day conference gathers educators, writers, and scholars from the different parts of the archipelago to discuss issues and challenges affecting the disciplines of language and literature.

The signing of R.A.10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act on May 15, 2013 makes it imperative for our educational system to examine its present language and literature curriculum, instruction, and learning resources in light of the implementation of the K to 12 Education Program and the use of the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in the lower grades.

With the theme “Language and Literature at the Crossroads: Research Routes, Learning Landscapes, Teaching Terrains,” the conference highlights Memorial Lectures in honor of three distinguished language and literature educators: Nieves Epistola, Maria Clara Ravina and Milagros Tanlayco. A panel of scholars will do a round-table discussion on K-12 and a panel of guest entertainment celebrities will talk about their engagements with literature.

Educare: A Young Child Conference

      Raising children entails a lot of preparation and working knowledge on the part of parents, teachers, and guardians - from dealing with temper tantrums, to selecting the best schools, to even choosing the right play dates for them.

      Filipino entrepreneurs eagerly await National Domestic Trade Fairs every year, since this serves as a venue where they can showcase their products and expand market presence.

National Domestic Trade Fairs constitute a major component of the services offered by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Domestic Trade (DTI-BDT), which is mandated to develop, strengthen and promote the domestic market for MSMEs.

To further enhance their marketing impact, National Domestic Trade Fairs are being launched under the “Sikat Pinoy” brand.  Expected to become a mainstay in MSME trade promotion, the Sikat Pinoy trademark will be adopted for the first time in the upcoming National Food Fair branded as Sikat Pinoy—Piling-piling Pagkaing Pilipino, to be held on August 21-25, 2013 at the SM Megatrade Hall.

According to Dir. Rhodora Leaño of the Bureau of Domestic Trade, “We will be offering the best in Filipino delicacies and specialty food products from SME manufacturers nationwide. This will provide our food producers with a wonderful opportunity to reach out not only to institutional buyers, but also the general consuming public.”

Cooking demonstrations, food tasting activities and seminars will be conducted throughout the event. A Coffee Pavilion and a Filipino Kitchen will also be put up highlighting provincial specialties. International Youth Development Summit Philippines 2013

      The International Youth Development Summit is a three-day summit organized by the National Association of UNESCO Clubs in the Philippines Inc. (NAUCP Inc.) and the Go Ahon Pilipinas Inc., in partnership with the City Government of Taguig. The festivity aimed to engage the youth in planning, implementing and monitoring the world’s current development and beyond 2015. Likewise, the program will educate the participants about the Philippines’ efforts in achieving the Millennium Development Goals headed by the United Nations.

       This year, “My Philippines, Beyond 2015: Vision, Inspiration, Transformation” was the theme selected. The program aims to facilitate dialogue and cooperation across an ethnically diverse and socially responsible group of student and youth leaders. The program will highlight the essential principles such as youth empowerment, equality, transparency, sustainability and inclusiveness.
Objectives:

      Deepen awareness concerning the progress of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) beyond 2015. Develop a clear understanding on the role of the youth and educators in pursuing UNESCO’s mission and vision at the grassroots level. Promote volunteerism as a tool in poverty eradication by showcasing best practices in implementing MDG-related projects.  Increase the membership of NAUCP in the Philippines by orienting the participants about UNESCO, UNESCO Clubs accreditation procedures and the benefits of becoming an accredited UNESCO Club

DOT Implements New National Accommodation Standards

The Department of Tourism (DOT) will be implementing its new National Accommodation Standards for Hotels, Resorts, and Apartment Hotels using the Star Rating System. The new standards employ a points-based rating system focused on inventory, availability, condition, and quality of a specific facility or service. 

“The new standards seek to boost industry competitiveness, especially in preparation for important events such as the World Competitiveness Forum next year, APEC in 2015, and the ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2016. On the initial implementation of the new standards and star rating system for classifying hotels, resorts, and apartment hotels, the DOT shall be engaging the services of a private quality assurance firm that will consequently tap external auditors to conduct the assessment. The use of a third party auditing firm is aimed at ensuring impartiality of the audit team and credibility of results. Most developed countries employ this scheme as independent audits are deemed more credible,” DOT Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. said. 

Launched last year through the DOT Memorandum Circular 2012-02, the new standards is part of the DOT’s policy reforms pursuant to the provisions of the Tourism Act of 2009, which mandates the DOT to formulate and enforce standards for the operation and maintenance of tourism enterprises, prescribing minimum and progressive levels of operating quality and efficiency consistent with local and international standards. The Tourism Act also provides for the development and enforcement of a comprehensive system for mandatory accreditation for primary tourism enterprises, and voluntary accreditation for secondary tourism enterprises, in accordance with prescribed guidelines and standards.

Featuring music by Ryan Cayabyab, direction by Nonon Padilla and book and lyrics by Juan Ekis and Paul Dumolwith the collaboration of Joem Antonio

This September, Christopher de Leon through Green Wings Entertainment Network, Inc. presents a new musical directed by Nonon Padilla: Lorenzo, which features the musical stylings of Ryan Cayabyab and libretto by award-winning writers Juan Ekis, Paul Dumol, and Joem Antonio. 

The musical, which tells the story of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz’s escape to Japan and subsequent martyrdom there, is framed within a play that tells the modern-day story of Laurence, an OFW whose imprisonment in a Middle Eastern country and imminent execution prompt him to reflect upon the struggles of his historical countryman and cope with the inner struggles of his own predicament. Lorenz Martinez and OJ Mariano star in these roles respectively.

Lorenzo is deeply relevant to Filipinos from all walks of life as its themes span the unquenchable rage of the suffering man to the cathartic acceptance of one’s circumstances, the struggles of our ancestors to our struggles in the ever-changing contemporary world, being apart from one’s home to inspiring others with one’s sense of being a Filipino in a foreign land. DOTC: NEW LTO LICENSE PLATES READY BY SEPTEMBER, Advanced Security Features and Latest Technologies Adopted in New Designs

Manila, Philippines – The much-awaited issuance of modern license plates by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), containing several advanced security features and a new alphanumeric design, will finally push through before the end of next month, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

“The public can start enjoying the benefits of cutting-edge standardized license plates before the end of September.  They need not wait much longer,” said DOTC Spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal.  

The 5-year contracts for the supply of motor vehicle (MV) license plates, amounting to around P 1.989-Billion, and the supply of motorcycle (MC) license plates, amounting to around P 1.196-Billion, have been awarded to the joint venture of J. Knieriem B.V. Goes and Power Plates Development Concepts, Inc.

The DOTC will now have 10 days to finalize the supply contracts, after which a Notice to Proceed will be issued to the winning bidder.  The consortium will then have 30 days to deliver the license plates to the LTO.

      This means that by the end of September, vehicle owners will begin receiving plates with new alphanumeric designs: the MV plates will now have a 3-letter, 4-number combination, and the MC plates will have a 2-letter, 5-number combination.  The private vehicle plates will also come in a black-and-white design, with a look similar to those in more advanced countries such as Singapore and parts of Europe.

The latest technologies adopted as multiple security features include:

• Laser-etched bar codes containing selective data inputs which will allow data verification with the LTO

• Reflective sheeting material, which will allow license plate visibility even from wide-entrance angles and up to a distance of 100 feet, for both daytime and nighttime.  This will have security images which cannot be removed by any known method without damaging the sheeting

• Anodized bolt head screws and nuts with serial numbers, which will prevent tampering and removal of the license plates from the vehicle bodies once installed.

“The new security features will promote safety and reliability in accordance with international quality standards,” Sagcal added.  “They will prevent the tampering, theft, and falsification of license plates, mitigating carnapping, colorum, and smuggling practices.”

With respect to various issues raised by losing bidders and other interested parties in connection with the bidding out of this project, the DOTC has already satisfactorily addressed their questions.

“What matters is that the DOTC conducted an open, fair, and transparent bidding in accordance with procurement laws,” remarked Sagcal.
