Global Village Champions For One Billion Meals Against Hunger

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has fought many battles in his life. This time the "Pambansang Kamao" has joined hand with the world's biggest feeding programs to knock out world hunger.

The Global Village Champions Foundation (GVCF), a world-leader in the humanitarian delivery of meals to starving people in disaster hit areas around the globe, has chosen Filipino boxing champion and Saranggani Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, along with Mr. Cesar Montano and Ms. Tessa Prieto, Philippine celebrities, as its goodwill ambassadors for Asia.

The goal of of GVCG is simple to achieve a day without hunger. since 1993,the program has provided and distributed more than 900 million documented meals to the needy around the world. The goal is to reach one billion meals by December 31, 2013, Barry said. The free meals come in the form of Vita Pro soybean food products.

In 2011, GVCF delivered disaster relief in the form of meals to Haiti, The Philippines, Japan, Thailand and the southern United States. In addition to Vita Pro meals, GVCF also delivered rice and beans, water, medical supplies and other basic needs.

Yank Barry said the GVCF is now preparing to send two million meals to provinces in Mindanao that were hit by storm Pablo, particularly Saranggani and the Compostela Valley. For the past 15 years, Barry said his foundation was able to send 60 million meals to the Philippines.

Recently, GVCF’s global ambassador, boxer Evander Holyfield visited areas in Mindanao that were hit by Pablo

Storm Pablo struck Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley in Mindanao last December 3 and brought devastation to the provinces for almost a week. More than 170,000 people were displaced by Pablo.

“I would like to thank Evander Holyfield and Yank Barry for personally coming to the Philippines, especially to my province to help me feed the typhoon victims and the needy,” said Pacquiao

Barry said sending food to the starving victims of storm Pablo in Mindanao is but a small step towards recovery.

“I don’t think your country understands the devastation brought by the typhoon. It would take between eight and 10 years to rebuild,” he said.

Barry said GVCF is steadily receiving cash donations from famous professional athletes, musicians, models and movie stars to fund its meal delivery operations around the world. Among the foundation’s sponsors are Celine Dion, Michael Jordan, actress Bo Derek, actor Jon Voight and astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

More about the Volunteering Expo

The Philippines is ripe for a volunteering revolution! It is one of the few countries that has institutionalized volunteerism as a strategy for national development and international cooperation. The Volunteer Act of 2007 provides a clear mandate and push for organizations to underscore the value of active citizenship and volunteering for development.

Volunteerism as a movement also reached a peak during the time of Ondoy, and much recently in the wake of the Sendong floods, helped along by new technologies and social media which made real-time information gathering and speedy mass mobilization possible. All these helped to awaken a critical mass to the rewards of volunteering.

The Volunteering Expo aims to help ignite a volunteering revolution, not only when citizen action is urgent, but at all times. We aim to raise the profile and value of volunteering and volunteers, elevating them in the consciousness of our society as integral and essential in our pursuit of progress and better life for all.

It is a pioneering platform for all those who share the work of volunteering and development. It provides an avenue for learning exchange and brokering of knowledge in volunteering for development. It is a venue for debate, discussion and continuing conversations about the role and the future of the volunteering and how it can be harnessed for national and global development. It will showcase best practices and laudable programs that have shaped the voluntary and development sector in the country.

The Volunteering Expo is conceived, developed and organized by VSO Bahaginan as part of its continuing commitment to promote volunteering for development.
