The Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) developed a complementary food called MomsieTM that is effective in reducing malnutrition prevalence among 6 to 36 months old children, according to the study led by Clarita R. Magsadia, Senior Science Research Specialist in 2016.


In the said study, the DOST-FNRI researchers fed MomsieTM, a nutrient-dense, ready-to-eat complementary food, to previously-identified normal, underweight and underheight children for 120 days.  Researchers then measured and compared the effects of feeding fortified and unfortified MomsieTM to 384 children in Angono, Rizal in terms of weight, length or height, nutritional status, haemoglobin and serum ferritin levels for anemia status.

In the study groups, children fed with fortified MomsieTM demonstrated higher mean length or height, weight and haemoglobin levels after the 120-day feeding.

The “fortified-undernourished” group also showed the highest mean increase in haemoglobin level at 0.7 grams per decilitre and the most improved anemia status from 50% to 24.3%  prevalence after 120 days.

Healthy food choices like fortified MomsieTM during the complementary feeding period is critical in improving the nutritional and iron status of infants and young children.  This is more relevant as the government just enacted the First 1000 Days into law that aims at alleviating malnutrition during this critical period of growth and development.

MomsieTM is made from soybean, peanuts, sesame seeds, mongo, oil, skimmed milk, margarine,  cocoa, sugar and salt.  Flavored to appeal to young children, MomsieTM has a rich, nutty and chocolatey taste.  A 25-gram pack provides 145 calories, 10 grams of total fat and 3 grams of total proteins.  For the feeding trial, MomsieTM  was fortified with vitamins A and C, folate, iron, calcium and zinc.
