The Commission on Higher Education is this year's host of the 10th National Biotechnology Week happening from November 24 to 28 with the theme "Edukasyon sa Bioteknolohiya: Pagyamanin para sa Kinabukasan Natin' Education in Biotechnology: To Foster for Our Future The CHED together with seven other partner-agencies have lined up activities that aim to create and promote public awareness and understanding on the importance of biotechnology in nation-building.
Partner agencies include the DA, DOST, DepEd, DENR, DOH, DTI and DILG. These are the key institutions involve in crafting a meaningful celebration that highlights the benefits and contributions of biotechnology to agriculture and food security, the delivery of health care service, sustainable environment and development of industries and economy
Various topics and activities on biotechnology are prepared to create awareness and educate the public
The latest biotechnology applications in the fields of health and medicine, food security and agriculture, and environment will be featured in this year's celebration which will run from November 24 to 28.
Sen. Juan Edgardo M. Angara will grace the opening ceremonies on November 24 to be held at the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Diliman, Quezon City.
It will be followed by the opening of exhibits, news conference, forums on biotechnology for the management of growth and health of aquacultured species, molecular markers in some high-value commercial crops, and presentation on the biotechnology research program of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology.
The second day will feature forums on nutrigenomics and drug discovery; food and pharmaceutical biotechnology; environment-friendly biotechnology products; science and development communicators; and development and trends in biotechnology. The Sixth National Biotechnology Education Conference for Teachers will also be held simultaneously at the University of the Philippines Diliman-Institute of Biology.
On November 26 discussions, titled “Experience in Biotechnology Research, Career Orientation Toward Biotechnology,” and “Biotechnology 101 for Consumers” will be held.
Also lined up for the day are the Fourth National Biotechnology Quiz for High School to be held at UP Institute of Biology; Second National Nutrigenomics Conference to be held at the Heritage Hotel; and Seminar on the Application of Biotechnology to the National Greening Program of the DENR to be held at Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau-DENR in UP Los Baños College of Forestry and Natural Resources, among others.
A forum on Pinoy Agricultural Biotechnology, film showings and a seminar on crop biotechnology will be the activities on November 27.
The weeklong activity will be capped with the awarding of winners for the Biotech Shorties Contest—a video-making contest organized by Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture-Biotechnology Information Center; the DA Infographics Poster Contest; and closing ceremonies.
