The Longest Hackathon in the Philippines "Hack the Climate: Manila" is here!

This June 6 to 8 at De la Salle University Taft Manila, a coding marathon aiming to create an app (mobile/web/hardware) that can be used by an NGO whose main advocacy is to respond to the Climate Change problem such as Move.ph, Greenpeace, ReDraw the Line, WWF and others, is going to happen! This is an opportunity for everyone to meet like minded people with ideas that could help our country in responding to Climate Change

The 56-hour hackathon will be dedicated for creating web and mobile applications that will be addressing concerns with climate change. These applications can be used to help prevent, prepare, respond, mitigate and recovery efforts when climate related issues arise. These issues include: Pollution (air, land and water), deforestation, overfishing, unsustainable consumption, greenhouse gases, etc.

In a recent volume of the journal Nature, researchers from Princeton document that even slight spikes in temperature and precipitation, which are a of global warming, significantly increase the risk of violent acts such as rape, murder and assault. The official death toll of Haiyan stands at more than 6,300, and if climate change continues unabated the casualties from future climate related disasters could exceed this by several orders of magnitude. Global warming threatens peace globally, and where governments have failed, grassroots action now affords the only democratic, viable alternative for preventing the climate catastrophe.

At Pro-Friends You And Your Family Is Home...

How would you like your home to be? Are you at home when you are home?

Owning your dream house proves to be a challenge these days. Several factors like location, affordable financing and environment play important roles in determining whether a house can be turned into a home. Fortunately for prospective homeowners, these elements are exactly what property developer and game changer Property Company of Friends, Inc., or simply PRO-FRIENDS, strategically consider in creating residential communities in providing quality homes to Filipino families.

To support this mission, PRO-FRIENDS’ 87 hectare development Carmona Estates recently launched its newest campaign aptly called, “We’re Home.” Held at the posh Blue Leaf Filipinas in Parañaque City, privileged media friends and special guests were among those who have been given a virtual walkthrough of the different offerings of Carmona Estates.

My Affinity With Animals Saved Me--Pamela Anderson On The Pamela Anderson Foundation Launch

Pam Anderson has opened up about her shocking and heartbreaking past.
During a speech at the launch of The Pamela Anderson Foundation, an animal advocacy group, on Friday, the former "Baywatch" star revealed she was a victim of multiple instances of sexual abuse and assault.
"I did not have an easy childhood. Despite loving parents, I was molested from age 6-10 by my female babysitter," she said. "I went to a friend's boyfriend's house while she was busy. The boyfriend's older brother decided he would teach me backgammon, which led into a back massage, which led into rape - my first heterosexual experience. He was 25 years old - I was 12."

And she said the abuse didn't stop there. "My first boyfriend in grade 9 decided it would be funny to gang rape me with six of his friends," she continued. "Needless to say I had a hard time trusting humans - I just wanted off this earth."

The 46-year-old actress said she found comfort in the company of animals, which led into her lifelong support of animal rights groups.

"My affinity with animals saved me. They came to me naturally," she said. "The trees spoke to me. I wasn't sure why I was alive. A burning question - a quest. My loyalty remained with the animal kingdom - I vowed to protect them and only them.

New Olds: Design between Tradition and Innovation

Together with German curator Volker Albus—who previously curated the travelling exhibit Somewhat Different: Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention at Yuchengco Museum in 2012—IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e.V.) and Goethe-Institut Manila present New Olds: Design between Tradition and Innovation.

New Olds features 60 objects that explore the relationship between tradition and innovation in contemporary design. The show looks into how contemporary designers work with traditional elements, whether it is style, material or craft. The exhibit also explores the themes of material, construction, configuration, production, and traditional use. 45 designers and design teams from Germany, other European countries, and the US enter into an intensive dialogue at the exhibit.

The international nature of the show is further emphasized by a selection of Philippine examples of design that put a twist on tradition. For the Philippine leg of New Olds, curator Volker Albus has especially selected chairs designed by Gabriel Barredo and Dem Bitantes.

Exhibit at Yuchengco Museum 3/F Galleries from May 9, 2014 - June 6, 2014.

Johnoy Danao’s First Mainstream Album

Dubbed as the must-have OPM album of the year, Johnoy Danao’s first mainstream album Samu’t-Sari boasts of songs that tackle love in its different faces. This is Johnoy’s first album under a major record label, and he chose Universal Records to take care of his songs.

“Releasing an album independently was a great experience for me,” admits Johnoy. “But, I realized that working with a label, gives me a chance to reach a wider audience. Limited din kasi talaga pag ikaw lang mag-isa. Kahit anong sipag mo, may hangganan sa maaabot na tenga.”

Johnoy, who has established his own strong following in his years as an independent artist, is proud to be in the Universal Records’ roster of artists, which includes OPM President Ogie Alcasid and Noel Cabangon.
