What do American Christmas Meals Have To do with X-Men’s Wolverine, Andy Murray, Tour de France Cyclists and Arctic Explorers

Christmas is around the corner and what is more related to this holiday if not food. Just lots and lots of it. foodpanda (www.foodpanda.ph) a mobile and online food ordering marketplace, estimated and matched the sum of food that is actually eaten in just one meal.

In the 13th Century, the medieval occasion ran for 12 days, with lavish feasts every day. Today, an excessive American Christmas meal for just one day means food compositions that equal a 6,000 calories consumption for the average person. This is equivalent to eating 117 biscuits, or 42 bananas, or 23 and a half hamburgers- to name a few.

6,000 calories a day is the amount that Hugh Jackman was consuming to match his role in Darren Aronovsky’s Wolverine film, matching the sum total of what Andy Murray, British number 1 tennis player, eats daily. That is identical to the amount that Olympic biathletes need for their training, Tour de France cyclists to sustain a day’s race and Arctic explorers to endure a day on the ice.

Sleep is key to success

The next time you tell yourself that you’ll sleep when you’re dead, realize that you’re making a decision that can make that day come much sooner. Pushing late into the night is a health and productivity killer.

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, the short-term productivity gains from skipping sleep to work are quickly washed away by the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation on your mood, ability to focus, and access to higher-level brain functions for days to come. The negative effects of sleep deprivation are so great that people who are drunk outperform those lacking sleep.

Why You Need Adequate Sleep to Perform

We’ve always known that sleep is good for your brain, but new research from the University of Rochester provides the first direct evidence for why your brain cells need you to sleep (and sleep the right way—more on that later). The study found that when you sleep your brain removes toxic proteins from its neurons that are by-products of neural activity when you’re awake. Unfortunately, your brain can remove them adequately only while you’re asleep. So when you don’t get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc by impairing your ability to think—something no amount of caffeine can fix.

TheFlying Stars MethodofFengShui is one of the oldest and most accurate system in FengShui practice. According to the Flying Star technique you can divide your home’s floor planinto nine energy “sectors”. Each sector, depending on which direction it is located, contains a different type of energy that is eithervery good, good, moderate, bad or very bad. By figuring out where the “good” and “bad” sectors of your home lie, you can see which room or part of the house contains the most auspicious energy.
By activating the luck of your most auspicious sector, you can obtain all the benefits of prosperity, success and happiness.
By knowing where the unlucky sectors are, you can avoid misfortune, illness and even death by applying one of the Five Element cures that can dispelor neutralize the bad luck.

Glasstech Asia 2014 to showcase innovative glass trends for real estate trade professionals

Looking Beyond the Glass Surface

MANILA, Philippines November 25, 2014 – The Philippine construction boom continues with the total number of construction permits rising from 29,424 to 32,7291 in the second quarter in 2014. Much of this real estate growth is driven by the expanding outsourcing sector and multinational companies. Construction spend for 2011-2016 is estimated to reach $70 billion, a large chunk of which will go into glass products for housing and building projects.

The surging demand for glass products presents a timely backdrop for Glasstech Asia 2014 which is currently being held today until November 27, 2014 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. Now on its 12th staging, the annual Glasstech Asia exhibit will feature a wide array of glass products for green architecture, and sustainable housing and building materials which are gaining widespread local adoption.

"Since its discovery 4000 years ago, glass has since evolved into one of the most versatile and amazing materials and its continuous use also armed us, the architects and designers, with a medium to fully express our architectural artistry to the fullest," said Ar. Leah Dela Rosa, Executive Director, Professional Development Commission, United Architects of the Philippines.

Employees and households in offices and residences that use glass architecture can expect more savings in energy costs. Glass admits natural light, reducing the need for electrical lighting. Additionally, glass allows an area to cool faster without relying too much on air conditioning.

“Green architecture creates efficient energy use in buildings by maximizing natural daylight and offering better visibility, improved thermal and indoor comfort. The proper selection of glass systems in building design minimizes solar heat and allows high visible light transmittance, translating to healthier office environments conducive to workplace productivity, as well as power savings and healthier indoor living for building residents due to improved thermal and acoustic comfort,” said Edgar Sabidong, board member, Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC).

Renato R. Ermita, national president, Flat Glass Alliance of the Philippines, Inc. (FGAPI ) adds, “With investors, developers, and tenants considering environment design, energy management practices, and green architecture certifications in assessing the value of a business property, glass has become a reliable construction material due to its energy efficient properties.”

R(IoT): A Rundown on the Internet of Things

In a recent report published by Freelancer.com (https://d3b423mfsq4bmy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/2014-07-30-Freelancer.com-Fast-50-report.pdf), it was discovered that there is a rise in data and engineering jobs as the Internet of Things (IoT) takes off.

“Things”, in IoT, refers to different internet-enabled devices, such as biochip transponders for pets and farm animals, pacemaker monitoring implants, self-driving automobiles, field operation devices similar to drones used for fire-fighting, or unmanned aircraft for surveying wildlife reserves. Current examples include smart home appliances such as ovens, refrigerators, and thermostats that respond to smartphone commands. The need for these devices has caused a growth in newer, better ideas for connecting more home and office devices to smartphones.
As many employers drum up IoT innovations, the demand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-related skills and specialties has reached new heights. Due to this development, the industry now faces a shortage of experts across the developed world and has started calling upon freelancers to cover the bases.
Inline with this, Talino Talks presents R(IoT): A Rundown on the Internet of Things -- a talk on everything there is to know about the Internet of Things.

Universal Records’ Kathleen Go is an Entrepreneur of Passion

Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go, over the years, has successfully prepared the country’s biggest independent record label to withstand the challenges of the ever-changing landscape of the local recording industry.
Because of this achievement, Joey Concepcion’s GoNegosyo has named Kathleen as one of the 50 Entrepreneurs of Passion. Her story is included in a special limited edition book with the subtitle “How Big Dreams and Good Ideas Became Great Businesses.”

She further adds, “We (in Universal Records) will always be here to service their needs, and at the same time discover and support great talents in OPM.”

Future Technology Unmasked In This Year's Science Film Festival At The Mind Museum Taguig

Have you ever been intrigued by the possibility of robots surpassing humans in the near future? Do you think you can live a normal life without using any kind of plastics? What will be the story of our lives shaped by future technologies?

These are just some of the curious questions to explore as Goethe-Institut partners with The Mind Museum to showcase the Science Film Festival 2014.  This aims to promote interest in science and culture among the youth, and motivate the younger generation to pursue a career in the field.  “The films will communicate scientific concepts in an easily-digestible and enjoyable form, providing schools and institutions a non-traditional medium for science teaching and learning,” says Dr. Petra Raymond, director for Goethe-Institut Philippinen.

This one of a kind science showcase is made possible with the support of the festival’s partners, including its main sponsor – premium automotive brand Mercedes-Benz, an advocate of technological innovation and progress.

“We are honored to host the opening of the 5th Science Film Festival in the Philippines,” says The Mind Museum curator, Maria Isabel Garcia. Centering on the theme of ‘Future Technologies,’ this year’s festival explores the broad spectrum of innovative technologies and cutting edge science through audio-visual content from all over the globe.

*Selfie* A Mental Disorder, American Psychatric Association Makes It Official

Chicago, Illinois – The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has officially confirmed what many people thought all along: taking ‘selfies’ is a mental disorder.

The APA made this classification during its annual board of directors meeting in Chicago. The disorder is called selfitis, and is defined as the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self  and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy.

APA said there are three levels of the disorder:

Triple O’s Latest Branch Now Open At At SM Aura

With Triple O’s latest branch opening at SM Aura Primier. Filipinos now have a chance to experience what makes Triple O’s a must-visit food stop in the Taguig area.

After its hugely successful launch in SM Megamall, the iconic Canadian Fast food Restaurant Triple Os recently opened its second branch at the food court of SM Aura Premier. For anyone who has been to Canada. Triple O's by White Spot will be instantly recognizable.

Established by Nat Bailey in 1928 as the first drive in restaurant ever. Triple O's took an uncompromising stance on quality and flavor. propelling the brand into the powerhouse that it is today. it can also be said that Triple O’s huge success is due to the legendary Triple O’s Burger, which continues to make waves among customers who simple can’t get enough of.

“Triple O” came from the shorthand language of the drive-in service attendant- otherwise known as “carhops – manning the immensely popular Canadian restaurant. As drive-in guest chose from mayonnaise and relish, their order slips were printed with X’s and O’s on the slip meant plenty of everything, and that’s exactly what Triple O’s by White Spot serves on the menu
Triple O’s  proclamation of having the sauciest, juiciest, tastiest, best burgers around, may sound like a tagline, but the 100% Canadian organic beef patty that goes into every burger is a convincing reason to back up the dialogue. Alongside its inimitable burgers,  which are perfectly grilled to t a  crunchy, flavorful crisp, as well as a selection of other main course, such as chicken, pasta and fish dishes.
In Manila, we have also become known as the place that serves the best milkshakes in town, which have developed quite a loyal following.

With Triple O’s latest branch opening at SM Aura. Filipinos now have a chance to experience what makes Triple O’s a must-visit food stop in the Taguig area.

TB DOTS Clap for a TB-Free Philippines

Recently, the TB or Not TB Team visited two schools in Quezon City for its #TBDay school tour—San Vicente Elementary School (September 8) and North Fairview Elementary School (September 22).

As part of the Department of Health’s (DOH) campaign to raise awareness on tuberculosis (TB), the students participated in fun and educational activities, which centered on fighting the stigma and debunking the myths and misconceptions about the disease.

Moreover, the highlight of the #TBDay school tour was the teaching of a children’s clap game.   Called “TB DOTS Clap Game,” it aims to educate students about TB DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course), an effective method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to cure TB and stop its spread in communities. In the Philippines, TB DOTS is offered for free thru accredited DOTS Centers.

TB DOTS Clap Game
Sa tuwing umuubo ang tatay ko
Natatakot ako baka TB na ito
Pero wag ka, wag ka
TB ay nagagamot
Kapag kumukonsulta ka
Di dapat mahiya kung may TB ka
Matanda man o bata
May ngipin o wala
Mahirap, mayaman
Bariles, payat o seksi pa
TB ay tatama kung mahina ka
Let’s play the TB DOTS Clap for a TB-Free Philippines!

Take A Free Tour At The Most Most Modern Bread Factory In The Country

Who knew that one of the country’s leading educational tours takes place in a…bakery
With more than 2.5 million visitors in the last 10 years, majority of whom are students from 15,000 different schools, this obviously isn’t your run-of-the-mill neighborhood panaderia.

State-of-the-art plant that can produce 650,000 loaves and buns daily Gardenia’s plant in Biñan, Laguna has been one of the top educational field trip destinations in the country since it opens the factory for free plant visits. The company showcases its world-class bread manufacturing facility that is ISO and HACCP certified, giving consumers the assurance of product quality and food safety in a well-sanitized bakery environment.
It is the company’s pride and joy where, each day, 650,000 loaves of bread and snack items are produced in a fully automated facility, untouched by human hands. Gardenia’s plant in Laguna is toured by as much as 3,000 to 8,000 visitors a day.

Baking breads untouched by human hands
The plant tour aims to impart to the students the knowledge about modern bread production that is untouched by human hands. Additionally, it promotes the importance of proper nutrition and sanitation practices as foundations to a healthy mind and body, and as well values education.

While Gardenia’s secrets to success will be shared to visitors via an audio-visual presentation (AVP), the most exciting part of the program is the actual catwalk tour of the visitors as they enjoy viewing the complete plant facility and step-by-step process of baking breads, the Gardenia way. Nobody leaves the factory without taking their good poses with a bread sample at the photo opportunity areas. No wonder they cannot forget their unusual field trip, baking breads untouched by human hands!
Making bread the Gardenia way is fascinating and educational for kids and adults alike - to see how staple food, like bread, is made on such a massive scale.

The NBSH Championship Finale Hits The Mark

After undergoing a tough and gruelling three-stage sandwich-making competition, Gardenia’s the “Next Big Sandwich Hit (NBSH)” event has finally come to an end with a literally delicious bang! All the ten teams battled tooth and nail to get the top prize and really made life difficult for the judges who had to choose the grand winner in this year’s competition.

“It was really difficult to be one of the judges in this year’s Next Big Sandwich Hit competition.  Not only were all the sandwiches delicious but they were all works of art!  From the preparation of the ingredients all the way to the plating, you can really see each teams’ creativity, passion, dedication, and drive to win.  From start to finish, all the ten teams really gave it their all and I have to give my commendation to them.  I know how hard they all worked and in my book they are all winners,” said Chef Jeremy Favia, one of the judges in the NBSH competition Championship Finale.

What is the future of your brain? Will technology help?

You may be surprised at how quickly the future is coming, in brain science and in wearable computers. Imagine a time when you can send a text message to someone just by thinking their name, or know when you will get a headache or fall asleep or have a seizure – an hour ahead of time, when you can decode what a baby is saying or thinking by listening with special headphones, when a doctor can log in to your mind and diagnose a problem or an injury, when a person’s guilt or innocence can be quantified scientifically, when a company can know precisely what its customers want – even before they do, when you can think a question and have Google answer it – directly into your mind! This Executive Talks will show that this time is coming, in the living future, and for this we can thank innovations in technology and in neuroscience.

Technology will unlock the power of the brain – to make the sick healthy, and the healthy superhuman.

"We look forward to the 2014 National Productivity Convention for it will offer us the opportunity to engage micro, small, and medium enterprises--the backbone of the Philippine economy--on the important issue of productivity and innovation which is key to empowering our workers and sustaining the growth of our enterprises towards regional and global competitiveness," said Baldoz as she primes up publicity for the biennial event.

Compact without the compromise High performance Dyson vacuum technology: Concentrated

Rising populations, urban living, and less space have all lead to us living in more compact spaces. Making the most of every inch is key to compact living. It’s not just about how you furnish your pocket-sized apartment; keeping a small space clean and tidy can help to create a more welcoming environment.

For British technology company Dyson, developing solutions for smaller spaces is a core part of their £1.5m a week research and development programme. Fitting on an A4 sized piece of paper, DC48 is engineered to be Dyson’s smallest, quietest Ball™ vacuum cleaner yet.

James Dyson, Company founder and inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner and bladeless fan, notes that “globally attitudes to technology are starting to design. People want better technology. Technology that makes their lives easier, and all in more compact, energy efficient forms.” The technology entrepreneur challenged his 1500 strong engineering team to find a solution.

The secret behind the DC48 is the Dyson digital motor - half the size of conventional motors with twice the power. It’s controlled by a microprocessor that makes 6000 decisions a second in order to optimise performance. This is a miniature revolution. With the tiny motor, the machine weighs in at just 2.7kg.

Powerful but quiet: Engineers were challenged to develop a powerful yet quiet vacuum cleaner. Acoustic engineers developed simplified airways in the floor tools, funnelling the turbulent air downwards to dampen the sound. They adjusted the motor’s orientation, and smoothed the airflow inside the vortex fingers of the cyclone to reduce sound from the machine.

Ball™ technology: The machine is light to pull, can pivot on the spot, and follows obediently without snagging on corners. It has a low centre of gravity for negotiating tight turns and getting around furniture. There are over 100 components arranged in the ball including the motor, ducting and 5 metres of cable.

Improved floor tools: These have been re-engineered to improve pick-up and sound quality, and reduce weight. Simplified airways decrease noise levels and a self-tightening mechanism keeps the brush bar stable. A dust capture channel prevents dirt from escaping back to the floor, increasing pick-up. The new configuration of carbon fibre filaments and nylon brushes removes fine dust from hard floors and ground-in dirt from carpets.

Duman Duman! Get Some Before It's All Gone At Sugarleaf Makati

Imagine a variety of grain that is planted only in a couple of weeks in select rice paddies in only a couple towns in Pampanga then harvested as the cool breeze of the holiday months sweep the rice fields. Processing this grain is a colourful undertaking in itself–from harvesting in early dawn, to winnowing, toasting and pounding to remove the chaff.  For every hectare planted with this special variety yields a mere 4.5 cavans of grain while a harvest of the normal variety of rice yields up to 300 cavans.
Due to the limited harvest quantity, which was fortunately spared by the typhoons that hit Central Luzon this year, the demand for duman is much greater than the supply.  However, despite its rather steep price, those who’ve enjoyed it vouch that it is worth every grain. It may be consumed by itself, rather like breakfast cereal, or taken with steaming gatas damulag (carabao milk) or tsokolate de batirol (frothy native chocolate).
Sugarleaf Makati shares this prized delicacy in limited quantities to residents of the metropolis. Together with La Moderna’s artisan bakery products as well as other carefully selected healthyummy food and non-food products
