Tanghalang Pilipino's Der Kaufmann, MERCHANT OF VENICE in Manila, this September!

Literature is one of my favorite subject even in my elementary days. And in high school when we had Shakespeares' Merchant of Venice as assignment, i would just read those english verses, even when i could not exactly understand them. This morning,  at the prescon of TP's Der Kaufmann, Merchant of Venice, Sir Rody Vera, who directed it, explained that this play was made for students, to easier understand what Shakespeare was trying to convey with this, his work. Im sure after seeing this, it will make you realize the truth and relevance of it, is timeless..

Gas chambers. Swastika. Concentration camps. The horror of the holocaust provides a dark backdrop for Tanghalang Pilipino’s third offering for its 27th Season, Der Kaufmann, a retelling of William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. A play within a play, Der Kaufmann, relives the horror of the holocaust, with the Nazis directing the Jewish “actors”, underscoring the dehumanizing effect of racism and intolerance, a sharp contrast to the original material, which was first staged by the company during its 17th Season.

According to one of the directors, Mr. Rody Vera, (Tuxqs Rutaquio, co-director) in developing the concept of Der Kaufmann, the homosexual, is also put in the spotlight. The categories of labeling prisoners/outcasts by the Nazis are precise, clear and cruelly clinical. And in this version of play, the gays are not spared -- for to fulfill the ideal world without wimps, stained bloodlines and perverts, that is, the ideal world of Belmont with Portia as its fated and royal purveyor, all dregs and scums  will have to be eliminated.

Tanghalang Pilipino’s Der Kaufmann is not meant to condemn any race for atrocities committed in the past, but rather, to underscore the artists’ continuing commitment to advocating  respect for human rights, equality, justice, mercy and forgiveness.

The cast is composed of TP’s Actors Company, together with guest artists Tuxqs Rutaquio, Lou Veloso, Tracy Quila and Trixie Esteban. The show will run from September 27 to October 13, 2013 at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute, Cultural Center of the Philippines. Ticket prices are Php600 (Regular) and Php300 (Students). 20% discount on the regular price for senior citizens, government employees, military employees and PWDs. (Please present valid ID)

Is 'Numerosity' Humans' Sixth Sense?

By Tanya Lewis,
Whether it's determining the number of ships on the horizon or the number of cookies in a jar, the human brain has a "map" for perceiving numbers, new research shows.

Topographical maps of the human brain are known to exist for the primary senses, such as sight, hearing and touch, but this is the first time such a map has been found for numerosity, or number sense. The map's layout allows for the most efficient communication among neurons doing similar tasks.

Studies in monkeys have shown that certain neurons in the parietal cortex, located at the back of the brain beneath the crown of the hair, became active when the animals viewed a specific number of items. These studies did not find a map for numerosity, though scientists have long suspected one exists. [The Top 10 Mysteries of the Mind]
"Scientists have suspected an ordered mapping of numbers for a long time," said Andreas Nieder, a neurobiologist at the University of Tübingen in Germany, who was not involved in the study. "Many laboratories have been investigating this idea intensively. Finally, Harvey et al. succeeded in convincingly demonstrating a map of numerical quantity in the human brain," he added, referring to researcher Ben Harvey, a neuroscientist at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

[Science Solitaire] The untold burden of poverty

BY MARIA ISABEL GARCIA
When you are poor, your intestine eats itself and you will start burping even your own soul.” That was my best remembrance of the line in the film, "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank." It was a profoundly stirring expression of the fact that the trappings of extreme poverty could cause your own moral fiber to fray. But as if that were not insidious enough, poverty could be consummate in its havoc. It could do something else.

Poverty could drain our mental batteries. The mental powers required to cope and overcome scarcity seem to make our brains less agile in thinking about other things in life. This is what the latest research based in Princeton entitled Poverty Impedes Cognitive Function” that appeared in the journal Science last Aug 30, 2013 has shown.

Last year, these same authors conducted an earlier research to find out what happens to people who face even just hypothetical situations of scarcity. The test involved subjects being given a specific number of shots and guesses to two groups in a version of “Wheel of Fortune” and in another game similar to Angry Birds. One group was given much less chances to guess or shoot and thus was called the “poor” group”. They found out that the “poor” group begin to be very short-sighted and score lower than the “rich” group. The researchers then imagined that it would be difficult to test for this in the real world. But this year, they were able to do it.

Armin Luistro F.S.C., then President of De La Salle Philippines together with Metrobank Foundation Inc., President Aniceto “Chito” Sobrepeña spearheaded the Teachers Month Campaign (TMC), in recognition of Filipino teachers and educators and their contribution in shaping the country’s future leaders. IBALONG Returns!

IBALONG is a folklore from Bicol, but it's story is universal, we can all relate from. Saw this epic musical play at CCP yesterday and it made me realized a lot of things, the many meanings of life, many just take for granted. Man is just part of life just as animals, plants and all other life is. we have to know the importance of all, as a whole, so that we can live this  life at its fullest, and understand that we cannot be here just on our own, we have to acknowledge and respect everything else because that way, we can fulfill the very reason why we are here for in the first place..

A musical interpretation of the Bicolano epic adapted for the stage by multi-awarded playwright, Rody Vera, which promises to inspire and renew one’s faith in the power of good. Using the yarn of legends it weaves a rich fabric glimmering with ancient truths. It shows how the battle between Dark and Light is as old as time but as relevant today as it was eons ago. It remind us that all actions – however mundane – have consequences and that the pursuit of beauty, truth and goodness is a daily challenge each of us must own; and that paradise is possible; we just have to fight for it.
